While colleges accept either test, most students now take only the ACT. Focusing on a single test allows you to become an expert in its format and strategies, something that’s harder to do when dividing time between two different exams. Greg has found that homeschoolers especially tend to perform better on the ACT, and it’s more coachable.

Not as much as it used to be. The ACT has surpassed the SAT in popularity since 2012. The SAT has also made some controversial changes, like adding an “adversity index," which many believe hurt students who don’t fit that model. ACT remains more transparent and consistent.

• The math section is 100% multiple choice—and calculators are allowed the entire time.

• The science section isn’t about science knowledge—it tests reasoning and graph interpretation, making it highly coachable.

• There’s less ambiguity in ACT question formats.

• Many students report higher confidence and better scores on the ACT after targeted prep.

This section intimidates many students, but it has little to do with actual science facts. It focuses on:

• Reading comprehension

• Graph/data interpretation

• Critical thinking

Ideally:

• Start in 9th or 10th grade

• Take the test 2–3 times per year through 11th or early 12th grade

• You can take the ACT up to 12 times total

Taking the ACT early builds test-taking confidence and increases the likelihood of a higher score (and more scholarship money!) by senior year.

Absolutely. The ACT experience gained over time can be a game-changer. Compare:

• A student who takes the test once in 12th grade vs.

• A student who has taken it multiple times and knows the layout inside and out

More practice = less stress and better results.

Many academic scholarships and grants are based directly on ACT scores. Even small score improvements can lead to thousands, or tens of thousands, of dollars in financial aid. That’s why Greg treats ACT prep as a long-term strategy, not a cram session.

The SAT’s publisher, College Board, began adding an “adversity index” to student scores, a metric estimating a student’s background and challenges.

Many experts believe this unfairly penalizes students who don’t fall into the “disadvantaged” category, by adjusting scores downward. The ACT has no such adjustment, making it a more consistent and equitable testing option.
